41. Mrs. Jegerasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government why he has reversed the decisions of the local authorities concerned and given permission for residential accommodation at 23, 36 and 37, Gordon Square, W.C.1, to be used for non-residential purposes.
§ Mr. SandysPermission was given by my predecessor because these buildings are within the university precinct as defined in the London Development Plan, and were needed for teaching and research purposes and for important work connected with overseas students.
Mrs. JegerMay I ask the right hon. Gentleman two questions? First, are we to presume that he will confirm this part of the County of London Development Plan, as the local authorities concerned are still awaiting the Minister's confirmation of this plan? Second, is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the development of the university precinct is causing a serious loss of residential accommodation in Central London? Will he, therefore, consider reversing the policy of his predecessor, who seemed to have got into the habit of refusing to confirm compulsory purchase orders for compensatory building in Central London?
§ Mr. SandysThere are a lot more than two questions in that. All I would say is that my predecessor acted in accord with the views of the London County Council, 211 which is the planning authority in this area. As far as approval of the County Development Plan is concerned, I believe there is another Question on this subject on the Order Paper.
