HC Deb 15 November 1954 vol 533 c16
31. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Food if he is satisfied that imported oranges and other fruit are now unaffected by insecticides or preservatives such as were used formerly by fruit growers overseas.

Dr. Hill

I believe that oranges are now unaffected by thiourea. A careful watch is being kept on certain other imported fruits such as pears for any remains of insecticides.

Mr. Sorensen

Is the Minister aware that at least one local health officer reported the detection of thiourea preservatives on oranges, not from Spain but from other parts of the world?

Dr. Hill

That has not been reported to us, but I should be glad to make inquiries if the hon. Member would supply the information.
