HC Deb 09 November 1954 vol 532 c1037
40. Mr. Langford-Holt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what reply he has made to the letter sent to him by Mr. Edmund Warwick, of the Shrewsbury Repertory Theatre, pointing out the difficulties being experienced in trying to maintain the live theatre in Shrewsbury and the necessity of introducing tax relief for such small theatres.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The writer has been told that his representations will be borne in mind in the general review of taxation before the Budget.

Mr. Langford-Holt

Will my right hon. Friend also bear in mind that this would be a great help to a very small section of the community who are rendering a national service to the community?

Mr. Butler

I have always been very soft-hearted towards the theatre and, indeed, have acted in that manner.
