§ 25. Mr. Westasked the President of the Board of Trade what steps he is prepared to take to attract new industries to Blaenavon.
§ Mr. H. StraussI regret that I cannot add to what my right hon. Friend said in answer to the hon. Member's Question on 5th March, 1954.
§ Mr. WestDoes the hon. and learned Gentleman realise that large numbers of highly-skilled and experienced workmen have been thrown out of employment at Blaenavon, and although many of them have been able to take up labouring jobs, it is in the interests, not only of Blaenavon but of the country, that these men should not become redundant; and what is he prepared to do about it?
§ Mr. StraussAs the hon. Gentleman knows, the Board of Trade would like to see more industries in this locality but we have no power to direct them, and, as my right hon. Friend explained to him, industry is not easily attracted to this town when there are places not far off which are more attractive.
§ Mr. BottomleyCan the Minister say what powers the Board of Trade has to encourage industry to go to areas like this?
§ Mr. StraussThere is a later Question on the Order Paper on that subject.
