HC Deb 04 November 1954 vol 532 c581
20. Mr. G. Jeger

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many Ministers have declined to accept the additional £1,000 per annum salary.

Mr. H. Brooke

The full salaries authorised by statute become payable this month. If any Minister wishes to draw less, he will doubtless instruct his accounting officer accordingly.

Mr. Jeger

Would it not be a good gesture if the Minister of National Insurance were to decline to accept the extra £20 a week until something has been done to help the old-age pensioners?

Mr. Brooke

Particularly on so delicate a matter as this, I do not think I can be expected to answer for other Ministers.
