HC Deb 04 November 1954 vol 532 c596
45. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Prime Minister whether the speech made by the Minister of Education on 25th October, 1954, concerning the politics of teachers, represents the policy of Her Majesty's Government.

The Prime Minister (Sir Winston Churchill)

I am sure we do not want national education mixed up with party politics, and this was certainly not the intention of my right hon. Friend. I am also sure that the parents of the children, whatever ticket they vote on, should be in closer friendly touch with the teachers who care so much for their children.

Mr. Thomas

Is the Prime Minister aware that considerable uneasiness was caused in the teaching profession by this incursion by the new Minister into the realm of party politics where teachers are concerned? Is he further aware that there is indignation in the Principality at the anti-Welsh sentiments which the Minister revealed in his speech.

Hon. Members

Answer.

The Prime Minister

I thought that I gave such a very nice answer to the Question that I might leave it at that.
