§ 8. Lieut.-Colonel Liptonasked the Minister of Works what recent count he has taken of the number of cars parked in the Royal Parks; and whether he has sanctioned such parking.
§ Mr. BirchIt is estimated that on weekdays about 500 cars are parked in St. James's and the Green Parks, 800 in Hyde Park, and 400 in Regent's Park. Many cars are parked in places which have not been reserved for that purpose, and, as I informed the hon. and gallant Member last week, I am reviewing the problem with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport and the police.
§ Lieut.-Colonel LiptonIs the Minister aware that he is running the biggest illegal car park in London? Is he further aware that he is under an obligation to issue written permission for every car which is parked in any of the Royal Parks half an hour after sunset? Is he issuing, or has he issued, those written permissions?
§ Mr. StokesWould the Minister not consider it good policy to make use of some of what I call the "dead" horse rides as permanent car parks? They are no longer used for horses. I had in mind the Mall.
§ Lieut.-Colonel LiptonThat is flogging a dead horse.
§ Mr. BirchI should not like to express an opinion on that. It raises a lot of rather big questions.
§ Mr. Ian HarveyIs the frontage of Transport House regarded as dead horse ground?
