HC Deb 31 May 1954 vol 528 cc891-2
41. Mr. Fenner Brockway

asked the Minister of Education if she will reinstitute the free coach service for children living at Eton Wick and attending schools in Slough, a distance of 2½ miles, in view of the danger of accidents at crossings in Eton High Street and the Slough-Windsor road, which have recently been the subject of inquiry by the Minister of Transport.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Education (Mr. Kenneth Pickthorn)

I would refer the hon. Member to my right hon. Friend's answer to his Question of 11th March. If the local education authority submits this as an exceptional case, she will certainly consider it sympathetically.

Mr. Brockway

Will the hon. Gentleman consult the Minister of Transport on this matter? Is he aware that these children have to cross the Burning Bush Corner at Eton, where not only the college boys stream across but 53 of these children will be streaming across as well? Will he examine the position with a view to regarding this matter as an exception?

Mr. Pickthorn

The case will be examined. If the local authority put this as an exceptional case, it will certainly be looked at and given every possible sympathy.
