§ 9. Mr. George Craddockasked the Minister of Education whether her attention has been drawn to a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation Report suggesting the establishment of a world co-operative agency for the dissemination of news on an international basis; and whether she will instruct her representative at the relevant meeting to give this proposal her support.
§ Miss HorsbrughYes, Sir, but the Report merely discusses a suggestion, and I am not aware of any actual proposal.
§ Mr. CraddockWill the right hon. Lady answer the latter part of the Question? May I ask her to be good enough to exercise discretion and pressure with our representative?
§ Miss HorsbrughI thought I had answered both parts of the Question. The first part asked whether my attention had been drawn to the Report, and the answer was, "Yes, Sir." The second part asked me to support a proposal, and I said that as far as I know there is no actual proposal but there is a suggestion that the matter might be discussed.
§ Sir H. WilliamsSince my right hon. Friend answered the Question, I presume that she understood it. Is this information used on an international basis, or is it issued in one language to people who do not understand it?
§ Miss HorsbrughI think I understood the Question. If my hon. Friend would like further information, he will find it in the Report entitled "News Agencies—their Structure and Operations." It is compiled by U.N.E.S.C.O. and copies are obtainable in this country through H.M. Stationery Office.
