HC Deb 26 May 1954 vol 528 c393
39. Major Anstruther-Gray

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether his attention has been drawn to a report of the Road Research Board to the effect that changing over from trams to buses results in a substantial reduction in accidents; and whether he will take action to hasten such a change-over, both in Scotland and England, in the interests of safety.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The substitution of omnibuses for trams is, and must remain, a question for decision by the statutory undertakings concerned, who in reaching a decision must have regard to all the factors involved. I am naturally glad to note the view of the Road Research Board that the replacement of trams by buses in London has probably reduced the number of personal injury accidents in London by about 300 per year.

Major Anstruther-Gray

Will my right hon. Friend take steps to bring the report to the notice of local authorities so that they may consider pressing on with the conversion from trams to buses?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I will look into that suggestion.
