HC Deb 26 May 1954 vol 528 cc385-6
6. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation on what date Mr. Fleetwood Pritchard was appointed by him; and what is the nature of his duties.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I appointed Mr. Fleetwood Pritchard as part-time Honorary Adviser on Public Relations on 26th April, 1954. He is paying particular attention to the presentation of the revised Highway Code and kindred matters and to road safety generally.

Mr. Dodds

Whilst wishing Mr. Fleetwood Pritchard every success in this important task, may I ask the right hon. Gentleman if he has a public relations officer for helicopters as well? If not, will he think of appointing one? Is he aware that such public relations work is badly needed?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I do not know whether the hon. Member ought not to declare that he has a personal interest in filling such a post, but I can assure him that I am very fully aided in this very vital field.

Mr. Ernest Davies

Why is it necessary to appoint someone in an honorary capacity in the Ministry of Transport? Are there not already within the Ministry people capable of handling the Minister's public relations? Why is it necessary to bring someone in?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

As I have pointed out before, there are many people who are ready to serve any Government in any voluntary capacity. Mr. Fleetwood Pritchard was Director of Public Relations at the Ministry of War Transport for four years and, since then, he has been closely related one way or another with transport matters. I believe that he has a very valuable contribution to make.
