HC Deb 10 May 1954 vol 527 c851
47. Mr. Erroll

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power the relation of his Chief Scientist's Division to that of the Fuel Research Station provided under the Estimates of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Fuel and Power (Mr. L. W. Joynson-Hicks)

The Fuel Research Station is broadly concerned with basic research and the Chief Scientist's Division with the development and application of new knowledge to current and future practice. The closest liaison is, therefore, maintained between the two bodies; they collaborate at all points of common interest, and their programmes are co-ordinated.

Mr. Erroll

Is it possible to amalgamate these two offices and thus effect substantial and useful economies?

Mr. Joynson-Hicks

No, Sir, I do not think so. Their functions are different, and, also, the Fuel Research Station undertakes work for other people as well as for the Minister.
