asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what representations he has received from the United Kingdom Chamber of Shipping concerning United States interference with our legitimate shipping interests in the Far East.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to the United States' measures affecting British ships, about which my right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary made a statement on 1st March. As is usual on matters affecting the interests of British shipping, there has been full consultation between the Chamber of Shipping and my Department.

Was not the Minister informed that the Chamber of Shipping were to issue such a disturbing statement before the Foreign Secretary spoke?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We have almost daily touch, and no question of formal representation arises. With regard to this whole issue, I share the view of my right hon. Friend, and I only hope that all international problems will be equally satisfactorily resolved.
