HC Deb 02 March 1954 vol 524 cc1006-7
57. Mr. Horobin

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government the number of slum houses demolished in England and Wales during each of the last five years.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (Mr. Ernest Marples)

Figures are not available for individual years before 1951. The figures are:

Period Number demolished
1st April, 1945, to 31st March 1951 33,656
1st April, 1951, to 31st March 1952 10,468
1st April, 1952, to 31st December, 1952 6,739
Total 50,863
Mr. Horobin

Does not this small figure lend added importance to the new drive for slum clearance, a drive like that which has been so successful in building new houses?

Mr. Marples

Yes.

Mr. Renton

Will my hon. Friend continue the figures to show roughly how many slums will be removed this year and next year?

Mr. Marples

So much depends on the progress of the Housing Repairs and Rents Bill now being considered in Committee.
