HC Deb 02 March 1954 vol 524 cc984-5
3 Commander Donaldson

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) what information he has as to the number of British firms which have indicated an intention of participating in the Canadian International Trade Fair to be held next May;

(2) what incentives or assistance have been offered to British manufacturers to participate in the Canadian International Trade Fair in May;

what has been done to direct the attention of British industries to the possibilities offered by the Canadian International Trade Fair which he is to open in Toronto on 28th May next.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

Information about this important fair has been published in the Board of Trade Journal, and the fair has been widely advertised by the Canadian Government in this country. My regional controllers have personally drawn the attention of trade associations and manufacturers to it. Exhibitors are given advice on how to obtain the maximum advantage from participation, but no financial assistance is given. So far 149 United Kingdom firms have booked 37,860 square feet of space; and a number of firms have arranged for their goods to be exhibited by their Canadian agents.

Commander Donaldson

While thanking my right hon. Friend for his answer, may I ask if an adequate allowance of dollars is made available to British manufacturers to participate in this Canadian Trade Fair?

Mr. Thorneycroft

Yes, Sir, I have had no complaint on that score. If there is any point raised on that aspect, I will look into it.
