HC Deb 23 June 1954 vol 529 c423
51. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when he will make a statement upon the proposed constitutional changes for Mauritius.

Mr. Lyttelton

I have asked the Governor of Mauritius to go into the question of possible constitutional changes, and until I have received and considered his report I am unable to make any statement.

Mr. Johnson

Is the Minister aware that the Mauritius Labour Party did win the last election, have a majority of seats, and are anxious that a statement will be made at the earliest possible moment?

Mr. Lyttelton

These are important matters and they must be considered upon a report from the Governor. When I have had an opportunity of studying it I will give a further reply.
