HC Deb 23 June 1954 vol 529 c418
24. Mr. Royle

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when representatives of the People's United Party will make an official visit to this country from British Honduras.

Mr. Lyttelton

It is hoped that representatives of the unofficial members of the British Honduras Executive Council, including members of the People's United Party, will visit this country in the autumn; the exact date has not yet been fixed.

Mr. Royle

Would it not have been desirable if the delegation had come much earlier? Is it not desirable that we should have an immediate contact with it for the purpose of consolidating relationships, particularly in view of what is happening in Guatemala?

Mr. Lyttelton

That is a matter of judgment. In my opinion, the right course was to see the new Government installed, which happened on 18th June, and to arrange a meeting when they had taken their places. That may not he right, but I think it is the best course.
