§ 34. Mr. Braineasked the Minister of Agriculture if he will take steps to direct the Essex River Board to complete the work of repairing and strengthening the sea defences of Canvey Island by waterproofing the top of the walls with suitable material.
§ Sir T. DugdaleNo, Sir. It is for the river board to decide what works should be done, and the improved sea defences they have constructed for the protection of Canvey Island are fully in accordance with the standards recommended by the Waverley Committee. I have no reason for suggesting to them that they should waterproof the top of the walls.
§ Mr. BraineIs my right hon. Friend aware that the Essex River Board has already issued a statement that there is still an element of risk in the case of 2268 Canvey Island? As the Waverley Committee specifically recommends that where there is a risk of overtopping this work should be carried out, will my right hon. Friend look into the matter again?
§ Sir T. DugdaleNot in this case. It is for the river board to make recommendations. The works on Canvey Island are, if anything, above the standard recommended by the Waverley Committee, that is, the standard sufficient to withstand the flood of 1953.
§ Mr. BraineIn view of the importance of this matter to the security of my constituents, I beg to give notice that I shall take an early opportunity to press it on the Adjournment.
