HC Deb 17 June 1954 vol 528 cc2259-60
22. Mr. Gower

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the amount of Income Tax he received in the last financial year from persons resident in Wales and Monmouthshire, making approximate calculations similar to those which enabled him to calculate the amount of Income Tax received from the seven crofting counties of Scotland.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I estimate that in the financial year 1952–53 the amount of Income Tax payments attributable to residents of Wales and Monmouthshire was between £30 million and £45 million. Approximations which were sufficiently accurate for the crofting counties of Scotland cannot be used to the same extent for the more varied sources of income in Wales and a more precise estimate could not be made without an inordinate amount of labour and expense.

Mr. Gower

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this answer represents a tremendous advance on anything else which has ever come from his Department?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

That always happens under this Government.
