HC Deb 17 June 1954 vol 528 c2257
17. Mr. A. Roberts

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will introduce legislation to control building society interest charges.

The Economic Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. R. Maudling)

No, Sir.

Mr. Roberts

Is the Minister aware of the public concern on these matters? Is he aware that the statements put out by the building societies are most unconvincing, to say the least?

Mr. Maudling

It is not the policy of the present Government to interfere with normal commercial relations in these matters.
