HC Deb 17 June 1954 vol 528 cc2275-6
49. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Prime Minister what success has been reached at the Geneva Conference with regard to the exchange of ambassadors between Her Majesty's Government and the People's Government of China.

The Prime Minister

Her Majesty's Government and the Chinese Government have agreed that the Chinese Government should send a Chargé d'Affaires to London having the same position and duties as the British Chargé d'Affaires in Peking.

Mr. Hughes

While thanking the Prime Minister for that reply, may I ask whether he is aware that we all hope that this exchange will lead to peace in the world?

Mr. Donnelly

Is the Prime Minister aware, if I may be permitted to say so without presumption, that for those who particularly advocated this step it is very good news indeed which he has just given to us? Is he further aware that this is a long delayed justification of the initiative originally taken by Ernest Bevin, in 1950?
