HC Deb 16 June 1954 vol 528 cc1932-3
12. Major Anstruther-Gray

asked the Minister of Food for an estimate of the effect which the reduction in the price of Canadian and United States wheat will have upon the price of bread.

Major Lloyd George

As National bread is heavily subsidised any saving will accrue to the taxpayer by reduction of the subsidy. The price of other bread is not subject to control.

Major Anstruther-Gray

Does my right hon. and gallant Friend look forward to any substantial saving to the taxpayer on this account?

Major Lloyd George

At the moment it would not amount to much more than about ¼d. on a l¾lb. loaf. The subsidy is running at £47 million, and any saving to the taxpayer will be welcome.
