HC Deb 16 June 1954 vol 528 cc1936-7
19. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is yet in a position to make a statement on the matters discussed and conclusions reached in his recent discussions in London with the Prime Minister of Malta.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Oliver Lyttelton)

I have nothing to add to my reply to a Question on this subject by my hon. Friend the Member for Billericay (Mr. Braine) on 2nd June.

Mr. Hughes

Does the Secretary of State realise that geography, strategy, traditions and war service place Malta in a quite special position to have its problems adequately attended to? Will he issue a White Paper dealing with these problems so that they can be discussed in this House?

Mr. Lyttelton

I think I am as aware of the geography, the strategy and all the rest of it as any Member in this House. As to the second part of the supplementary question, I am awaiting the reply from the Prime Minister on the proposals I discussed with him when he was in London.
