asked the Minister of Agriculture how areas affected by foot-and-mouth disease are informed of its presence.

Sir T. Dugdale

The local authorities and police forces and certain other organisations are informed by telegram, and announcements are issued through the Press and B.B.C. Details of the restrictions imposed are also circulated very widely by post.

Mr. Williams

The Minister must be aware of recent cases where farmers have not heard the news, and there has been danger of their not carrying out proper precautions. Even though the police are informed, has the Minister a method of making the police pass on the information to the farmers?

Sir T. Dugdale

I accept what my hon. Friend says, but I think that on the whole the system works well. The current arrangements will be reviewed in the light of any recommendations in the report of the Gowers Committee, which is expected in a few weeks.
