asked the Prime Minister if he will make a statement on the grant of recognition for long service in fire brigades.

Yes, Sir. The Queen has approved proposals for the institution of a Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. A White Paper on the subject is available now in the Vote Office.

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this announcement will give very great satisfaction to men in the service who, hitherto, have been in the humiliating position of having to pay for their own long service medals?
