HC Deb 01 June 1954 vol 528 c1054
2. Mrs. Mann

asked the Minister of Labour if he is aware of increased unemployment in Coatbridge in the heavy industries; and what steps he is taking to meet the situation.

Mr. Watkinson

I am aware that there is a certain amount of short time working in the iron and steel industries in Coatbridge. This under-employment appears to be due to a falling off in demand by the consumer industries. The position has improved during recent months, and is being kept under review in consultation with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Supply.

Mrs. Mann

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that it is not merely short-time working due to a changing pattern because soft steel is now in demand, but that Stewarts and Lloyds are transferring 600 workers and Lustroid, the women's factory, is closing down, and there is a complete lack of juvenile employment in Coatbridge? Does not the hon. Gentleman think that he could look into all these aspects?

Mr. Watkinson

I have promised the hon. Lady that we will look into the long-term situation but, on the present facts, the figures are going down a little. However, I agree that the long-term situation is worrying, and we shall keep it under review.
