§ 35. Mr. K. Robinsonasked the Minister of Health if he will repeat the special allocation of capital from central funds for mental and mental deficiency hospitals known as the "mental million"; 1553 and if he will increase substantially the amount to be made available for this purpose in the next financial year.
§ Mr. Iain MacleodI intend that some special allocation shall again be available next year for capital expenditure on mental and mental deficiency hospitals, but it will not be possible to increase the total allocation.
§ Mr. RobinsonIs the Minister aware that although the "mental million" is a drop in the ocean, it is, nevertheless, a very welcome drop and there is great satisfaction that it will be repeated next year? But will the right hon. Gentleman think again about the possibility of increasing the amount, because so much urgent work needs to be done?
§ Mr. MacleodI recognise the need, which is, as I am sure the hon. Member knows, very much in my mind. But it is also true, as the hon. Member said, that the "mental million," which will be repeated again this year, although perhaps a small contribution, is a very valuable one in this field.
