HC Deb 19 January 1954 vol 522 c835
49. Mr. Rankin

asked the Prime Minister what plans the Government have prepared to meet the possible slow-down in buying by the United States of America, with the consequential effects on British trade.

The Prime Minister

Our economic plans should certainly be adapted to meet any changes of conditions which can be foreseen but it is not thought that it is desirable to announce in advance specific measures against hypothetical situations.

Mr. Rankin

Is the Prime Minister not aware that a recession is taking place in America and that, owing to the loss in dollar earnings, unemployment will develop in this country? Can he not elaborate in a little detail what plans the Government propose to deal with that situation?
