HC Deb 24 February 1954 vol 524 c397
46. Mr. Fenner Brookway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if, in view of the declarations by the heads of three other Provinces of Uganda supporting the Kabaka of Buganda, he will now reconsider the decision to depose the Kabaka.

Mr. Lyttelton

I assume that the hon. Member refers to a letter which I have received from the Rulers of the three "Agreement" Districts which together form part of the Western Province. I must again emphasise that the decision to withdraw recognition from Kabaka Mutesa II is final.

Mr. Brockway

Would not the right hon. Gentleman agree that this letter indicates that the demand for self-government, moving towards independence, does not only come from Buganda but comes from other areas in Uganda as well?

Mr. Lyttelton

I would not agree with that general statement.
