HC Deb 22 February 1954 vol 524 c31
58. Commander Donaldson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the proportion of electrical development in the rural areas of Scotland compared with the remainder of Britain during the financial year 1953–54.

The Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. James Stuart)

I am informed that the number of farms given an electricity supply for the first time during 1953 was 2,239 in Scotland, and 11,172 in England and Wales. These figures are 6.4 per cent, and 4.2 per cent. of the total number of farms in Scotland and in England and Wales respectively. In addition 2,107 crofts in the North of Scotland District were connected to a supply during 1953.
