§ 1. Miss Burtonasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will ask the British Standards Institution to recommend to the manufacturers concerned that all highly-inflammable materials, particularly those used for children's wear, should be appropriately labelled.
§ The President of the Board of Trade (Mr. Peter Thorneycroft)It would not be appropriate for me to make such a request to the British Standards Institution; nor, I think, would the Institution find it easy by the means open to them to achieve the object that the hon. Member has in mind.
§ Miss BurtonWhile agreeing with the right hon. Gentleman that it would not be easy to bring this about, may I ask whether he would consider means of making this danger a little better known to the public, because we have read lately of a great many children who have been burnt because their clothing had caught fire?
§ Mr. ThorneycroftA great many textile materials are inflammable, but it is quite impossible to start labelling them as such.
