§ 14. Mr. G. M. Thomsonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will establish a number of State scholarships, available at Scottish universities, for adult students attending adult education classes.
§ Mr. Henderson StewartNo, Sir. As recommended by the AdvisoryCouncil on Education in Scotland, responsibility for the award of bursaries in Scotland rests with education authorities, who have power to make awards to adult students attending universities.
§ Mr. ThomsonWould not the Minister agree that the awarding of scholarships for adult students is a rather special case and that the treatment of this class of student varies a great deal between local authorities? Would he not agree that the Government might give a lead to local authorities on this matter?
§ Mr. StewartI am sure that the hon. Gentleman knows that this Question of establishing State scholarships in Scotland, as in England, has been more than once considered by all those responsible, and the view has always been that the existing provisions in Scotland should stand.
