HC Deb 09 December 1954 vol 535 c1100
24. Mr. Erroll

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to ensure that adequate provision for the housing of prison warders and their families is being secured at the present time.

Major Lloyd-George

The number of men prison officers (all grades) is at present 4,197; the number of married quarters is 3,080. A further 323 quarters are under construction or about to start. Another 233 quarters are planned to start in 1955–56.

Mr. Erroll

While this rate of progress is satisfactory, is the Home Secretary satisfied that the shortage of adequate housing is not proving a deterrent to the recruitment of prison warders?

Major Lloyd-George

It is very difficult to answer that question. The general aim is to get married quarters for about 75 per cent. of the staff, and I think that the progress made will achieve that aim very soon.
