HC Deb 08 December 1954 vol 535 c958
43. Mr. M. Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will appoint a committee to inquire into the position of coloured people in Great Britain.

Mr. Hopkinson

I cannot at present add to the reply my right hon. Friend gave to the hon. Member's Question on the same subject on 3rd November.

Mr. Stewart

Will the Minister recognise that 3rd November is now more than a month ago, that many local authorities are facing problems in this connection which are really beyond their resources, and that it is desirable in the interests of everyone that the Government should give a lead in this matter?

Mr. Hopkinson

I am aware of the interest and anxiety on this matter, which is being very actively considered. It is not a simple matter, as I explained in a recent Adjournment debate, but I hope it will be possible to make a statement on the subject very soon.
