HC Deb 08 December 1954 vol 535 cc948-9
48. Mr. J. Hynd

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what maximum signing on rate has been recommended for African workers by the Kenya Coffee Board and whether he will state the real value of such rate today as compared with the pre-war rate of 9s. per month.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The Governor has informed me that it will take a few days to collect the information. I will write to the hon. Member as soon as it is received.

49. Mr. J. Hynd

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will explain what are the persons known as coffee officers who are now invited to attend conferences of the Kenya Coffee Board, in company with African planters; and how and by whom the latter are selected to accompany such coffee officers.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

They are Government officers of the Agricultural Department. I have consulted the Governor about the second half of the Question, and will write to the hon. Member when I receive his reply.

Mr. Hynd

Will the Minister add to his inquiries of the Governor to ascertain whether amongst these African people there are representatives of the African co-operatives?
