§ 7. Mr. K. Thompsonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what further consideration he has given to proposals put before him for avoiding financial hardship to traders when Purchase Tax reductions are made on stocks held and on which tax has been paid.
§ Mr. H. BrookeI have considered this subject very carefully and sympathetically; but all the proposals which I have so far seen are open to the objections explained in the Report of the Hutton Committee, and for that reason it has not been possible to accept them.
§ Mr. ThompsonMay I take it from his reply that my hon. Friend's mind is not closed on the subject and that if further proposals are put before him offering a solution to the problem, he will be willing sympathetically to consider them?
§ Mr. BrookeI will certainly give that undertaking.
