HC Deb 06 December 1954 vol 535 c597
39. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to what extent anti-Semitic propaganda is now allowed in West Berlin.

Mr. Turton

It is laid down in the Berlin Constitution that racial persecution and any manifestation of national or religious hatred are contrary to its spirit, and are to be made punishable.

Mr. Hughes

Is the Minister aware that reports in the "Manchester Guardian" last week revealed that at a recent meeting in Berlin the Jews were told they would not escape the gas chambers the next time? Are Her Majesty's Government not going to take any action? Are they not even going to make a protest?

Mr. Turton

The hon. Gentleman no doubt was pleased to find that the party responsible for that got fewer votes in the Berlin elections. This is primarily a matter for the Berlin authorities, not Her Majesty's Government; and the Berlin authorities are fully aware of their responsibilities, as is shown by the resolution already passed by the House of Representatives condemning occurrences at that rally.
