HC Deb 02 December 1954 vol 535 c313
Mr. S. Silverman

On a point of order, Mr. Speaker. I want to ask for your guidance and, if possible, assistance. I notice on the Order Paper today a number of Motions for the appointment of hon. Members to certain Select Committees. It has, of course, been customary for a very long time for those nominations, as it were, to be made on the recommendations of the Committee of Selection. I think it will be within your knowledge, Sir, that seven hon. Members on this side are, in certain circumstances, no longer represented in the usual channels. Therefore, they have no opportunity of making representations to the Committee of Selection or influencing the appointment of Members.

In the case of one of the hon. Members concerned, he has served with great distinction on the Estimates Committee for many years. I should, therefore, like to ask you how their interests in these matters may be protected or safeguarded?

Mr. Speaker

The hon. Member could raise that matter when we come to the appointment of the Select Committees. That comes later. The Motion is debatable and, if it is debated, the matter can be raised then. I think that it is perhaps premature to raise it now.
