Jonesasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what the policy of the Trinidad Colonial Government is in regard to the provision of housing for the working classes; what loans are available for persons to build their own houses; and how far subsidies from State or local funds are available for government-built houses.
§ Mr. LytteltonA Housing Policy Committee was set up last year by the Trinidad Government and its report, due shortly, is expected to include recommendations regarding the provision of housing for the working classes. Housing loans are made to sugar workers from the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund up to a maximum of 1,000 dollars per person and by the Government Housing Loans Board to civil servants; loans may also be obtained through the Building and Loans Association. Government funds are used to subsidise the slum clearance and rehousing schemes carried out by the Planning and Housing Commission.
