HC Deb 28 October 1953 vol 518 c2784
24. Mr. J. J. Astor

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General if he is now in a position to give a firm date for work on the new head post office in Plymouth to be commenced.

Mr. Gammans

It is expected that the building will start by March, 1955, at latest.

Mr. Astor

Will the Minister as soon as possible give a more specific reply to this Question? Is he aware that this matter has been under review by his Ministry for many months, and that it is of considerable importance to the local authorities who are planning the rebuilding of Plymouth?

Mr. Gammans

Yes, but the difficulty up till now has been to plan a building which would satisfy the Corporation's wishes without costing the Post Office too much money. Up to now we have not been able to agree on what is a reasonable building for this site which would satisfy our requirements at the same time as satisfying the desires of the Corporation.
