§ 44. Mr. Teelingasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will consider the possibility of talks with Japan concerning the latter's reserve of sterling; and whether such talks should take place in Tokyo or London.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterDiscussions with Japan will no doubt be necessary before the end of the year on the Sterling Payments Agreement, which expires on 31st December. I cannot, at this stage, say where these talks will take place.
§ Mr. TeelingHas my hon. Friend seen statements made by, I think, his opposite number in Japan, suggesting the possibility of having the talks in London and hoping that they would be held here? If that is so, would we be willing to do everything we could to make any such arrangements possible?
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterA number of statements have been made in Japan, not all of them quite consistent with each other.
