HC Deb 21 October 1953 vol 518 c1946
6. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a statement on the present conditions in Kenya indicating what progress has been made to the latest convenient date towards settlement and peace in that country.

Mr. Lyttelton

I hope to make a full statement next week.

Mr. Hughes

Will that statement include a reference to the economic and social conditions in Kenya, which are the root cause of the disturbance?

Mr. Lyttelton

Perhaps I might ask the hon. and learned Gentleman to wait for the statement, when he will see whether he is satisfied with it.

Mr. Baldwin

Would my right hon. Friend send to the hon. and learned Gentleman a copy of the speech made a few days ago by Sir Evelyn Baring, Governor of Kenya?

Mr. Lyttelton

One of the reasons why I thought it inappropriate to make a statement on Kenya today was that the Governor's speech was published only this morning.
