HC Deb 21 October 1953 vol 518 cc1969-70
44. Sir R. Acland

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what recent decisions have been reached about new financial support from Her Majesty's Government for the purposes of economic and social development in Malaya.

Mr. Lyttelton

I have recently assured the High Commissioner that Her Majesty's Government will provide the financial assistance in 1954 which the Federation Government will need to prosecute the campaign against the Communist terrorists without delaying economic and social development. The amount and form of the assistance which I shall in due course ask Parliament to provide is now under consideration.

Mr. Popplewell

In connection with this economic position, is the right hon. Gentleman satisfied with the security of land tenure being given to the settlers brought into the resettlement camps?

Mr. Lyttelton

This question bears no relation to the matter of finance, and I must ask the hon. Gentleman to put the question on the Paper.

Sir R. Acland

Can the right hon. Gentleman say at all when we can expect that further information he said was forthcoming?

Mr. Lyttelton

I am not able to yet.
