HC Deb 21 October 1953 vol 518 c1962
26. Sir L. Plummer

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the purchasing power of the British Guiana dollar in 1945 and 1953 in relation to 1938.

Mr. Lyttelton

The internal purchasing power of the dollar is estimated to have fallen by 1945 to 64 per cent. of its 1938 value, and by mid-1953 to 37 per cent. of its 1938 value.

Sir L. Plummer

Has there been a corresponding increase in wages for industrial sugar workers in the Colony?

Mr. Lyttelton

There have been very large increases. For example, the average weekly cash earnings of field workers on sugar plantations were more than twice those in 1945.
