asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if his attention has been drawn to the recent occurrences at Saughton Gaol, Edinburgh; if he is aware that these are causing some anxiety to Edinburgh citizens, especially those in proximity to the gaol itself; and what steps he is taking to prevent such cases in future.

Yes, Sir. I am aware that there have been an unusual number of escapes from Edinburgh Prison during the past year. A number of measures have already been taken to strengthen the security arrangements, and further precautions are under consideration.
