HC Deb 10 November 1953 vol 520 cc754-5
17. Mr. W. G. Bennett

asked the Minister of Labour how many coal miners were idle in Lanarkshire in October, 1946, October, 1949, and October, 1953, respectively, or on any other comparable date.

Mr. Watkinson

Five hundred in October, 1946, 413 in October, 1949, and 132 in October, 1953. The figures exclude unemployed persons who were known to be unfit for employment in the coal mining industry.

Mr. Steele

Could the Minister inform us at what time of day these men were idle?

Mr. Watkinson

Not without notice.
