HC Deb 21 May 1953 vol 515 cc2246-7
35. Sir R. Acland

asked the Undersecretary of State for Commonwealth Relations whether he will make a statement summarising the reasons against the return of Seretse Khama as chief of the Bamangwato Territory.

Mr. J. Foster

No, Sir. I have nothing to add to statements already made on the reasons for Seretse Khama's exclusion from the Chieftainship of the Bamangwato. These reasons, which were fully set out in the White Paper (Cmd. 7913) issued by the previous Government and in the statement that I made in this House on 27th March, 1952, still hold good.

Sir R. Acland

Does the Undersecretary realise that all these reasons are quite inadequate to justify a continuation of this position? Is not it time that all parties, with the honourable exception of the Liberals, should recognise that we have been wrong in this business of Seretse Khama?

Mr. Foster

No, Sir.
