HC Deb 18 May 1953 vol 515 c1675
17. Mr. Langford-Holt

asked the Minister of Transport if, in view of the wastage of roadway now taking place, he will permit through westbound traffic on the Victoria Embankment to use that part of the highway formerly used by trams.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport (Mr. Gurney Braithwaite)

We are by no means satisfied with the present situation. The real solution is to reconstruct the carriageway and, meanwhile, we intend to review with the local authorities and the police the existing traffic arrangements.

Mr. Langford-Holt

Would not my hon. Friend agree that all the roads between the Strand and the Embankment are clogged with cars parked on both sides of the road, and would not this be a temporary solution which would require no expense whatsoever?

Mr. Braithwaite

That is one of the matters we are seeking to examine.

Mr. Langford-Holt

Can my hon. and gallant Friend say when this examination, which has been going on for a long time, will be completed?

Mr. Braithwaite

My hon. Friend will be aware of the inevitable promptitude of my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport.
