HC Deb 18 May 1953 vol 515 cc1669-70
7. Sir I. Fraser

asked the Minister of Food whether he will make a statement as to the rationing of sugar.

11. Brigadier Medlicott

asked the Minister of Food how soon he anticipates being able to make a further statement concerning the derationing of sugar.

The Minister of Food (Major Lloyd George)

I shall deration sugar as soon as I am satisfied that there is enough refined sugar available, but I cannot yet give a precise date. The ration was increased yesterday, and the housewife's supply of sugar in ration and bonus is now at the rate of 1 lb. a week. Manufacturers are also getting a 20 per cent. increase in their allocation.

Sir I. Fraser

Does my right hon. and gallant Friend think that he will be able to make his announcement before the Summer Recess?

Major Lloyd George

I would rather not give a precise date. All I can say is that as soon as there is the necessary availability, not only of the refining capacity but of stocks in the retail shops, we shall lose no time in making an announcement.
