HC Deb 12 May 1953 vol 515 c1036
16. Mr. Gower

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps he will take to encourage firms and undertakings who introduce co-partnership, profit-sharing, welfare, and pension schemes for the benefit of their employees.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr. R. A. Butler)

I have considered this matter but I am not satisfied that there are sufficient grounds for giving further tax reliefs in this connection.

Mr. Gower

Will the Chancellor agree that there are few better incentives than schemes of this kind, which produce for their beneficiaries physical rewards for effort and faithful service? Will he reconsider the matter?

Mr. Butler

I have very carefully investigated the various types of concession or relief related to these various types of scheme and, if my hon. Friend wishes, I will endeavour to acquaint him with some of the complexities.
